
What Conveyor Width Is Needed for Egg Counting?

An egg counter can only count the eggs that pass through its sensing area. That makes the question of what conveyor width is needed less about the nominal width printed on a belt specification and more about the real width used by eggs in normal production. A counter that is too narrow leaves an unmonitored lane. One that is unnecessarily wide may complicate fitting, support arrangement and cable routing without improving the count.
For commercial egg collection systems, conveyor width should be confirmed before equipment is selected or brackets are made. Measure the belt, observe the egg flow, allow for guides and edge conditions, then select a counter designed for that working width.
What conveyor width is needed for accurate counting?
The required width is the full usable width of the egg stream at the point where the counter will be installed. This is not always the same as the overall conveyor or belt width.
An egg belt may be physically 300 mm wide, for example, but fixed side guides, support rails or a curved transfer can restrict the area where eggs travel. Conversely, eggs can spread towards both edges on a straight, lightly loaded belt. The counter must cover the area where an egg can realistically pass, including an egg travelling close to either side.
Start with the clear belt width between any permanent guides or obstructions. Then inspect the line during typical operation. Look for eggs that run at the edges, move diagonally after a transfer, or sit in more than one lane. The widest observed egg path is the width the sensing system must accommodate.
A useful rule is simple: do not size the counter only to the average egg lane. Size it to the maximum normal egg spread. The aim is to ensure that every egg crosses the detection area once.
Nominal belt width versus usable egg width
The nominal belt width is a useful starting point, but it is not a final installation measurement. Belt edges may turn upwards, run beneath side rails or be partly concealed by the conveyor structure. Those areas may not be available for egg travel and may not be accessible for mounting.
Usable egg width is the section of the belt carrying eggs through the intended counting point. It should be measured at that point, not at a convenient location elsewhere on the line. A belt can behave differently before and after a transfer, incline, accumulator or guide change.
For accurate selection, record three dimensions: the total belt width, the clear width between side guides, and the widest egg spread seen in operation. If these measurements differ, use the widest egg spread as the principal sizing figure and confirm that the mounting position provides adequate clearance.
Measure the conveyor where the counter will sit
Measuring a stopped conveyor is necessary, but watching it run is equally important. Egg position changes with belt speed, flock output, belt condition and the way eggs enter the collection line.
Choose a straight, stable section of conveyor wherever possible. The belt should be supported, tracking correctly and free from abrupt movement at the sensing point. A location immediately after a transfer can be suitable only if eggs have settled into a consistent flow. If eggs are still rolling, bunching or changing direction, move the counter further along the line or improve the guide arrangement first.
Measure across the belt at the planned sensor location. Take the measurement square to the direction of travel. Do not measure along a sloping guide or diagonal frame member, as this can produce a misleading result.
Also check the available space above and beside the belt. The sensing unit, brackets, guards and cable route all need clearance. A width match alone does not guarantee that a counter can be fitted without interference from supports, drives, covers or cleaning equipment.
Check the egg flow at normal and peak output
A line that appears well controlled during a quiet period may spread wider when production is at its highest. Observe the conveyor when egg flow is representative of normal operation and again when the line is heavily loaded.
Pay particular attention to four conditions:
eggs travelling against either belt edge;
eggs entering from adjacent collection sections;
pairs or groups of eggs moving close together; and
eggs turning or travelling diagonally after a transfer.
These conditions affect more than width. They also determine whether the chosen installation point gives each egg a clear, repeatable pass through the sensing zone. A properly sized counter cannot correct a poorly controlled transfer or a belt that allows eggs to bypass the intended path.
Match the counter range to the belt
Counter selection should match the measured conveyor width with allowance for the actual egg path. Agro System equipment is available for a range of egg conveyor applications. The Accucount Mark 5 is intended for 10 cm belts, while Accucount N series models cover conveyor widths from 20 cm to 100 cm.
The correct model is the smallest unit that fully covers the usable egg stream and can be installed correctly on the conveyor. Selecting close to the measured working width is often appropriate on a controlled, guided line. Where eggs are known to wander, where guides are inconsistent, or where a future belt modification may widen the active path, allow suitable coverage rather than relying on a tight fit.
Do not assume that a wider counter automatically provides a better installation. On a narrow belt, an oversized arrangement can make mechanical mounting less straightforward and may place sensing components where they are exposed to damage or difficult to clean. The right choice is based on coverage, physical fit and stable egg presentation.
When the belt width falls between standard sizes
If the measured usable width lies between available counter ranges, assess the conveyor condition before choosing. A well-guided belt with a consistent egg lane may suit the smaller compatible option only if all eggs remain within its covered area. If eggs approach the edges or the belt has variable tracking, the next suitable width is the safer selection.
This decision should not be based on a single measurement. Repeat the check across several collection periods and with the line running. Small changes in guide position or belt tracking can matter when the sensing width has little spare coverage.
Where a conveyor is wider than the available counting range, do not attempt to treat it as a standard fit. The egg stream may need to be channelled into a controlled lane, divided into separate paths, or assessed for a different installation arrangement. The objective remains unchanged: every egg must pass through a defined sensing area, without an alternative route around it.
Width is only one part of the installation
A correctly sized counter depends on the conveyor delivering eggs in a predictable manner. Belt tracking, guide condition and support beneath the belt all influence the counting point.
A belt that moves sideways can shift eggs outside the expected path. Worn guides can allow eggs to spread or turn. Excessive belt vibration can alter egg position just as it enters the sensing area. These are conveyor issues, but they become counting issues when they affect how eggs pass through the counter.
The installation should also leave the sensing path free from dirt build-up, damaged guards and temporary items placed on the conveyor. Maintenance access matters. If staff cannot inspect and clean the installation easily, a correct initial setup can lose reliability over time.
Electrical integration should be considered during the same survey. Confirm the position of the control equipment, the cable route and the destination for the per-egg pulse output before finalising the mounting point. A short, protected cable route and accessible fixing arrangement reduce avoidable service work later.
A practical width-check procedure
Before ordering or fitting an egg counter, isolate the proposed conveyor section safely and measure the physical belt and clear working area. Restore operation and observe egg travel at the intended location. Mark the outermost normal egg positions on both sides of the belt, then measure the distance between them.
Next, check whether eggs remain within those marks at peak flow and after any transfer feeding the belt. Confirm that the selected counter range covers this full path and that the frame allows the unit to be mounted squarely without obstructing operation.
Finally, inspect the same location after installation. Run eggs through the full belt width, including deliberately checking the edge lanes. This is the point to correct guide alignment, belt tracking or mounting position, before the counter becomes part of production reporting.
The best sizing decision is made at the conveyor, with eggs moving, rather than from a drawing alone. Measure the active egg path, allow for normal variation and install the counter where the belt gives every egg one clear route through the sensing area.
