Which Egg Counter Fits Wide Conveyors Best?

A counter that works accurately on a narrow transfer belt can be the wrong choice for a 600 mm collection conveyor. When asking which egg counter fits wide conveyors, the first requirement is not simply a higher count capacity. It is full sensing coverage across the usable belt width, with installation that keeps eggs moving normally and gives the control system a clean pulse for every egg counted.

For commercial egg collection, a wide belt usually requires a two-dimensional infra-red counting head sized for the conveyor. The counter must detect eggs travelling at different positions across the belt, including eggs that approach close to either edge or run in uneven rows. A narrow sensing area on a wide conveyor creates an obvious risk: eggs can pass outside the detection zone, and reported production will not reflect actual belt flow.

Start with the conveyor's usable width

The relevant measurement is the belt width occupied by eggs, not the nominal width of the conveyor frame. Measure the belt itself and allow for its normal tracking movement. A belt that shifts from side to side during operation needs sensing coverage that still captures eggs at both travel limits.

Also consider fixed guides, raised edges and transfer points. Side guides may keep eggs away from the extreme edge, which can reduce the required sensing width. Conversely, a belt feeding from several tracks may spread eggs across almost the full surface. Measuring the actual egg path during normal production is more useful than sizing from a drawing alone.

The Accucount Mark 5 is intended for 10 cm belts. It is a suitable choice where eggs run in a defined narrow stream, but it is not a substitute for a wider counter simply because the conveyor has low throughput. Width coverage determines the product fit.

For wider collection belts, the Accucount N series covers conveyor applications from 20 cm through to 100 cm. This range allows the counting head to be matched to the belt rather than forcing the belt flow into a narrow detection area. Select the model that covers the full egg-carrying area while taking account of belt wander and the space needed for mounting.

Which egg counter fits wide conveyors in practice?

For a conveyor wider than 10 cm, the appropriate starting point is an N series counter sized to the belt. On a 20 cm belt with controlled egg flow, a 20 cm model may be sufficient. On a 60 cm or 100 cm belt, specify a counter designed for that width rather than attempting to count only a central lane.

The correct choice still depends on how eggs present to the sensor. A wide belt carrying a single centred row is physically wide but may not require full-width coverage if guides reliably contain the row. That arrangement should be assessed carefully. Guides can move, become damaged or allow eggs to bypass during peak flow, so a full-width counter often provides greater operational tolerance.

Where eggs arrive from multiple cage rows or several collection sections, assume that the full belt can be used. Wide conveyors commonly see changing distribution as flock production, belt speed and upstream transfer conditions vary. A counter should be specified for normal variation, not only the neatest operating condition.

Do not size only by eggs per hour

Counting rate matters, but it does not answer the width question. Two belts may carry the same number of eggs per hour while needing different counters: one might present eggs in a narrow single line, while the other carries several irregular lanes across a broad belt.

The two-dimensional infra-red sensing arrangement is intended to identify individual eggs as they pass through the counting area. Proper width selection is what allows this arrangement to monitor the whole conveyor path. If the belt is wider than the sensor field, improving line speed settings or adding downstream software cannot recover eggs that were never detected.

Check the belt condition before specifying equipment

A wide conveyor is not always a consistently wide egg path. Belt tracking, tension, cleanliness and the condition of rollers all affect where eggs travel. Before selecting a counter, inspect the belt under load and watch several complete collection cycles.

Pay particular attention to eggs at transfer points. Eggs may fan out after arriving from a lift, change direction at a bend or bunch temporarily before entering the main collection run. The counter should be installed where egg movement is stable enough for individual detection, not where product is still settling after a transfer.

Egg spacing is equally relevant. Eggs touching side by side, crossing paths or arriving in clusters make any counting location harder to manage. If this happens regularly, address the belt flow and installation position as part of the project. The aim is not to create an artificially slow line, but to give the counter a consistent passage zone.

Installation clearance matters on wide conveyors

A correctly sized head still needs a practical installation position. The sensor must be mounted square to the belt and held securely so its relationship to the egg path does not change through vibration or routine maintenance. Confirm available clearance above and around the belt before ordering, especially where guarding, overhead supports or egg collection equipment restrict access.

The installation point should provide a straight, stable section of conveyor. Avoid positions immediately adjacent to a roller, belt splice, sharp transition or place where the belt profile changes. These locations can alter egg height or movement and may make the sensor setting less repeatable.

Access should not be treated as an afterthought. Farm maintenance teams need room to inspect the sensing area, clean the equipment and check alignment. If the counter is installed in a difficult location, routine attention is more likely to be delayed, particularly during busy production periods.

Allow for belt wander and edge flow

Wide belts frequently move laterally by a small amount as they run. This is normal to a degree, but the sensor coverage must account for it. Observe the belt near the intended mounting point rather than at a different section of the line, as tracking can vary along the conveyor.

If eggs routinely travel close to an edge, determine whether that is caused by the belt layout or by poor tracking. Correcting a mechanical issue may improve both egg handling and count confidence. It does not, however, justify selecting a counter that is too narrow for the operating width.

Confirm the output requirement with the control system

An egg counter is part of the farm's measurement chain. Its physical fit is only half the specification. The receiving system must also accept the counter output and register every pulse correctly.

A per-egg pulse output is useful where a PLC, production monitor or management system needs a direct count signal. Confirm the required pulse timing, input type, cable route and available power supply before installation. These details are straightforward to resolve at the planning stage and harder to change once mounting brackets and wiring are in place.

If the site records counts by house, row, belt or collection period, document where each counter signal will be assigned. A precise counter cannot correct a reporting setup that combines outputs from separate production areas without clear identification.

A practical specification process

For wide conveyor projects, record the usable belt width, maximum belt wander, normal egg spread, belt speed, installation clearance and the type of receiving input. Include photographs or measurements of the proposed mounting point where possible. This gives the equipment supplier enough information to match the sensing width and advise on placement.

Avoid specifying from conveyor width alone when the line includes guides, transfers or unusual egg flow. Equally, avoid narrowing the choice only to reduce initial equipment cost. A counter that misses the outer lanes creates a permanent production-data problem, and the error may remain unnoticed until counts are compared with packing or sales figures.

For most wide egg collection conveyors, the answer is clear: select an Accucount N series model that covers the complete operating egg path, then install it on a stable belt section with the correct clearance and control-system connection. The best counter is the one sized for how the conveyor actually runs on the farm, not how it appears when empty.
